Miss Nevada Nina Sanchez made her state proud when she was crowned Miss USA 2014. She beat out 50 beauty contestants from every state and received the title by Miss USA 2013 Erin Brady. The state of Nevada has never won, so Sanchez has officially marked the first win for Nevada.
The event took place in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with Giuliana Rancic and Thomas Roberts hosting the show. Florida Georgia Line and Nelly performed “Cruise” during the swimsuit competition and they were definitely enjoying the ladies.
During the question competition, Sanchez answered judge Rumer Willis‘ question regarding sexual assaults on college campuses of why she believes it is being ignored and what should be done to solve the problem.
She replied, “I believe that some colleges may potentially be afraid of having a bad reputation and that would be a reason it could be swept under the rug, because they don’t want that to come out into the public.”
She continued: “But I think more awareness is very important so women can learn how to protect themselves.” Sanchez finished stating, “Myself, as a fourth-degree black belt, I learned from a young age that you need to be confident and be able to defend yourself. And I think that’s something that we should start to really implement for a lot of women.” You go girl!
At a young age, Sanchez learned to defend herself and gain confidence by enrolling in taekwondo. Once she became an adult she took her skills and passion to teach women and kids about self defense. The title winner holds this subject close to her heart and can relate on a personal level from past experience.
The first runner up to Sanchez was Miss North Dakota, Audra Mari. Sanchez’s beauty shined not only through her appearance, but through her heart, knowledge, and compassion. Apparently her favorite movie is Tangled and she holds the title of Miss USA. Her Disney wish came true, she now wears a crown and can officially call herself a princess!
